Trying to escape from police, the suspects were involved in a hit-and-run crash on Dogwood Road at Gwynn Oak Avenue before they bailed out of the vehicle, according to authorities.
"Several people bailed out of the vehicle," police reported.
An officer found one suspect at the corner of Englewood Avenue at Gilmore Street, where they traded gunfire, police said; the officer was hospitalized with lower body injuries, but he was not shot, officials reported. He was placed on administrative leave pending an investigation.
Police said K-9 units later found one of the suspects deceased.
In addition, "investigators located a weapon believed to be tied to this morning’s incident," police said.
The Office of the Attorney General’s Independent Investigations Division is investigating the incident. The division was created as a result of the Maryland Police Accountability Act of 2021 to investigate all police-involved deaths. A report will be presented to the Baltimore County state's attorney.
This is the second case where the attorney general's office has been deployed to investigate a police-involved death in the past several days. A fatal crash Saturday involving a driver pulled over by the Maryland Transportation Authority Police who sped away, taking the Wilkens Avenue exit off Interstate 695, was the first time the attorney general's office was called to investigate a civilian-involved death, the Associated Press reported.
