NOTTINGHAM, MD — A new Starbucks drive-thru has opened in The Shoppes at Nottingham Square.

The drive-thru opened Friday morning, according to Lisa Geiger, spokesperson for Federal Realty, which manages the shopping center.

In April, Geiger told Patch the plan was for Starbucks to open the drive-thru by the summer, and after that, a cookie store will begin building in the vacant space in the shopping center.

Until now, Starbucks had been using the spot next to Ledo Pizza during the drive-thru construction.

The new drive-thru aligns with the plan by Starbucks to align its offerings with demand. Drive-thru, delivery and mobile orders accounted for 75 percent of sales in the second quarter, officials said in a May 3 Starbucks corporate earnings call.

About 90 percent of future stores will be drive-thrus, according to founder/CEO Howard Schultz.

"Our newest class of drive-thrus will integrate new store designs, technology, including more handheld devices and equipment improvements that will increase efficiency, speed of service, and we believe deliver even greater profitability in the future," Schultz said. "We will then incorporate the new technologies and equipment into our existing stores and provide our people with the tools and resources they need to elevate the Starbucks experience we deliver to our customers and create even more demand in the future."
