LANSDOWNE, MD — The man accused of fatally shooting a boy, 16, outside Lansdowne High School earlier this year was arrested, police said Monday.

Officers said they charged Challah Haywood, 18, with first-degree murder. He is being held without bond.

Days after the March 4 shooting, a vigil was held on the school's campus.

"My nephew's blood cries from this place," said DeWayne Gamble, the victim's uncle, according to WBAL. "So we're setting a new foundation to break that cycle of murder in this neighborhood, and we're going to see a change."

Family members told WBAL the victim was Kamau Campbell, a student at Lansdowne High School.

Police said the victim was standing outside in a shopping center near the school on a Tuesday afternoon when a suspect hopped out of a vehicle and opened fire. The victim ran toward Lansdowne High, which had already finished classes for the day, and collapsed on school property.

Officers said the suspect shot the victim a few more times and fled.

Gamble, an Arbutus resident, also launched a fundraiser for his nephew's funeral.

"Kamau, affectionately known as 'Daddy,' was full of jokes, sarcasm, and a spirit that lit up every room. He was a talented football player and a proud member of his team. More than that, he was the heart of our family — deeply connected to his sisters and brothers, always looking out for them, sharing laughs, and creating unforgettable memories," Gamble wrote on the GoFundMe page.

The fundraiser collected $10,748 from 226 donors by noon Monday.

"His life was senselessly and horrifically taken due to gun violence, leaving our hearts shattered. This sudden tragedy has devastated our family and friends," Gamble wrote. "Due to this unexpected loss at such a young age, we are asking for help to cover funeral expenses and support our grieving family. Any donation, no matter the amount, would mean the world to us."
