Memorial On Pulaski Highway Honors Stanley Vingsen Jr.

BALTIMORE COUNTY, MD — After a familiar figure around White Marsh was killed in a crash off Campbell Boulevard, community members are coming together to honor his memory.

Stanley Vingsen Jr., 68, was hit and killed by a driver making a U-turn at the intersection of US 40/Pulaski Highway and Campbell Boulevard, according to police.

Vingsen was walking south on Route 40 when a 1500 Dodge RAM turned west and hit him before 9 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 18, officials said. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Known as the "Walking Man" and "Pulaski Pete," Vingsen could be seen walking along Route 40 and surrounding areas.

A memorial honoring him was set up at the crash site. Candles line Pulaski Highway on either side of the growing collection of flowers and balloons.

One note offered condolences to "Mr. Stanley Family & Friends & all the drivers that would see Mr. Stanley everyday on Route 40." It was signed: "A Route 40 West Driver."

Another condolence letter was left by the Bird River Community, stating that Vingsen's "presence on Pulaski Hwy will be missed by all."

Vingsen is survived by brothers Frank and John Vingsen, sister Ann Korns and many nieces and nephews, according to his obituary.

His family is planning a candlelight vigil at 8:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 3, in the parking lot at 9955 Pulaski Highway. A Facebook page has been established in honor of Vingsen as well.
