Dr. John C. Mather, the 2006 Nobel Prize Winner in Physics, will open the Science in Your Neighborhood Series, sponsored by University Park Community Solar LLC on Saturday, April 30 at 3:00 pm at the University Park Church of the Brethren.
An important outreach goal of UPCS is to encourage young people to pursue careers in science, engineering and sustainability. Our county is lucky to have many scientists and engineers who can be role models for our students, but there are not always opportunities for the busy professionals to meet the busy students. This year UPCS is trying to create a setting where students can meet these neighborhood scientists and have conversations, ask questions and gain inspiration.
After a short UPCS business meeting and announcements, our very special guest will be Dr. John Mather, the 2006 winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics. Dr. Mather lives in Hyattsville and works at Goddard Space Flight Center; yet many people don't know he is our neighbor. Dr. Mather will talk about his student years and becoming a scientist. He will also describe the work for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize. There will be an informal Question and Answer time when students can get to know this illustrious neighbor and maybe even an autograph.
