Annexation, RM Graduation and Campaign Annunciations

It’s the 67^th anniversary of the invasion of Normandy, France and another day to keep in mind our veterans and the sacrifices they made in “The Greatest Generation” and continue to make today in the name of our freedom. God bless.

Here’s the “thank a veteran” edition of “The Rundown”:

• U.S. Rep. Donna F. Edwards (D-Dist. 4) of Fort Washington and Montgomery County Council President Valerie Ervin (D-Dist. 5) of Silver Spring both come from military families and both hail from the southwestern United States. Their fathers were friends long before they were.
  In the first episode of a new County Cable Montgomery television show, “No Boundaries,” the influential leaders discuss how their upbringing led to their lives of public service and how many of their shared experiences have influenced issues about which they are most passionate.
  The news program “aims to show not only the views of local leaders on certain issues, but also what has led them to take these positions,” according to a county news release. Other County Council members and decision-makers and business leaders from around metropolitan Washington will be featured on future episodes.
  County Cable Montgomery can be found on channel 6 on Comcast and RCN and on channel 30 on Verizon.
  The half-hour episode will be broadcast at 1:30 p.m. on Sundays, at 9 p.m. on Wednesdays and at 6 p.m. on Saturdays and is available on YouTube by clicking here.
• The Rockville City Council meets at 7 tonight at City Hall. The agenda includes discussion of annexation issues, including a request to annex a portion of a lot at East Gude Drive and Southlawn Lane in Burgundy Park and an amendment to the city’s Adequate Public Facilities Ordinance that would allow properties seeking annexation into the city to apply the county’s test for school capacity.
  The property at issue is the former Reed Brothers Dodge site on Frederick Road across the road from the King Farm Boulevard entrance to King Farm.
  Sherwood Associates has filed an annexation petition and is seeking to redevelop the property, which is in the Gaithersburg High School cluster, with 417 multifamily units and ground floor retail.
  A late add to the council’s agenda is a closed session to discuss Choice Hotels, which is .
• The city’s election season kicked off yesterday with former City Councilman John Hall as the first out of the gate in formally announcing his bid for a return to the council. (More on that tomorrow.)
  The days ahead will bring announcements from Mayor Phyllis Marcuccio, who is staging her re-election announcement—quite literally—on the stage at the pavilion at 7 p.m. on Friday. Marcuccio’s announcement comes one day ahead of the candidacy announcement of Councilman Piotr Gajewski, who will announce at 1 p.m. on Saturday at whether he will oppose Marcuccio in a bid for mayor or run for re-election to the council.
• ’s Class of 2011 graduates from DAR Constitution Hall in DC at 10 a.m. tomorrow.
