ROCKVILLE, MD — The Montgomery County Council on Tuesday expressed support for impeaching President Donald Trump over the U.S. Capitol attack.

The move comes six days after violent Trump supporters stormed the Capitol in Washington, D.C., forcing congressional lawmakers into lockdown and resulting in the death of at least five people.

"The Montgomery County Council fully supports the U.S. House of Representatives' resolution to impeach President Donald Trump which charges him with inciting an insurrection and endangering our democracy and our nation," the all-Democratic legislative body said in a statement. "Every day he remains in office, he poses a threat to the health and welfare of the American people, puts the security of our country at risk, and damages our nation's standing in the world."

The violence, which began after Trump urged his supporters to "fight like hell" against the result of the 2020 election, has drawn condemnation from foreign leaders and U.S. lawmakers on both sides of the aisle.

Democrat Rep. Jamie Raskin of Maryland spent last week drafting an article of impeachment against Trump, charging him with "incitement of insurrection" for his role in the Capitol attack.

It was introduced in the House on Monday. The following day, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi named Raskin the lead impeachment manager of Trump's impeachment trial.

"What took place is absolutely intolerable and unacceptable," Raskin said in support of the resolution, adding it was "very clear the president did not discharge the proper duties of office."

House Democrats plan to vote Wednesday to impeach Trump for inciting the deadly insurrection on the Capitol. If the resolution passes, Trump will be the first U.S. president to be impeached twice.

As of Tuesday evening, only a handful of Republicans support Democrats' effort to remove Trump from office. They include Reps. John Katko of New York, Adam Kinzinger of Illinois, Liz Cheney of Wyoming.
