Emergent BioSolutions Strikes $222 Million Deal to Buy Canadian Firm

Montgomery County-based firm Emergent BioSolutions struck a $222 million deal to buy a Canadian firm, Cangene Corp., The Baltimore Sun reports.

The deal is subject to a two-thirds vote by Cangene shareholders and approval by a Canadian, The Baltimore Sun reports.

Emergent is the only FDA-licensed maker the anthrax vaccine. The vaccine is manufactured at a facility in Michigan, but the company’s headquarters is in Montgomery County. Patch reported in September that Emergent is planning to relocate from Rockville to Gaithersburg.

The deal was the Emergent’s attempt to expand from its roots as a federal contractor, The Washington Post reports.

Cangene is best known for its drug WinRho, which treats a blood disorder in newborns, The Post reports.
