Fire At Recycling Center Causes Heavy Flames In Rockville

BREAKING NEWS: Both East Gude Drive and Southlawn Lane are blocked for a heavy fire at a recycling center in Rockville Friday afternoon.

(Updated at 4:52 p.m. Friday): ROCKVILLE, MD — A large pile of recycling material caught on fire at a recycling center in Rockville, causing heavy smoke and flames Friday afternoon.

The two-alarm fire occurred at Georgetown Paper Stock at 14820 Southlawn Ln. at about 4 p.m.

Firefighters encountered heavy flames, an "extensive fire" and large smoke conditions in the area, Montgomery County Fire & Rescue spokesperson Pete Piringer said.

About 100 firefighters responded to the scene.

Several roads are closed in the area due to the smoke, Piringer said.

East Gude at Southlane Lane is closed. Southlawn Lane is closed between Loftstrand Lane and Avery Road.
