Patch: How has the legal industry transformed over the years, and how does The Machin Law Firm, LLC stay ahead of new developments?
The Machin Law Firm, LLC: The legal industry transforms frequently and, in some areas, more rapidly than expected. We are engaged in these legal updates through taking extensive Continuing Legal Education, remaining active in our local bar associations and by subscribing to legal publications. We also stay updated throughout the legal community and work with other local attorneys to keep our legal senses fresh. Because laws are always changing, we feel clients are best served when they are represented by attorneys who are also able to adapt and make necessary changes which parallel the changing legal climate. Since we pride ourselves on innovative strategies, we keep updated and transform ourselves to accommodate the changing laws.
Patch: Tell us about your respective backgrounds and experience.
The Machin Law Firm, LLC: [Rada] Before I went to law school, I was an insurance agent for a Fortune 500 company, had worked for the federal government and ran a successful small business development firm. During law school, I served as the clerk for the legal fraternity Phi Alpha Delta and the secretary for the Federalist Society. I was the recipient of the Dean’s Fellow award and scholarship and the Rosa Parks Merit Scholarship at UDC-DACSL. I also interned for the D.C. Office of the Attorney General, TimeBanks USA and the Montgomery County Office of the State’s Attorney. I had worked as a law clerk for a prestigious, white-collar criminal defense firm, clerked for a bankruptcy law firm and clerked for a third general legal practice prior to starting our firm. I recently authored and published a business law guide, called "How to Start a Small Business on a Tight Budget: The Checklist." Now, I am happily married to my law school sweetheart and business partner. I currently represent immigration, business, family and criminal law clients as a partner/owner of our firm!
[Manuel] I moved to D.C. to attend law school from Gainesville, Fla. I met my lovely wife and now business partner. During law school, I served as the membership chair for the Federalist Society. I was also a recipient of the Dean’s Fellow award and scholarship at UDC-DACSL. While attending law school, I interned for the Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) as a pro bono appointed advocate and the Montgomery County Office of the State’s Attorney. I also worked as a law clerk with a general legal practice prior to starting our firm. I currently represent business, real estate and Wills and Estates clients as a partner/owner of The Machin Law Firm, LLC. In law school, we both provided pro bono legal service through rewarding clinical experiences. We both worked in the same two clinics: Government Accountability Project Clinic and Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic at UDC-DACSL. We assisted public and private whistle-blowers for major corporations and the government in their claims and aided low-income taxpayers through IRS audits, tax deficiencies and petitions to the U.S. Tax Court through these clinics, respectively.
Patch: The Machin Law Firm, LLC focuses in eight practice areas: contract and business, immigration, estate, DUI/DWI, real estate, family, tax and employment. How did you come to select these disciplines?
The Machin Law Firm, LLC: We selected these disciplines as we pride ourselves in providing full-spectrum legal services to our clients. Both of us have distinct legal focus. It is helpful to have the both of us working to accomplish the common mission of excellent client service, but we still individually focus on distinct legal practice in our respective areas of interest.
Patch: The Machin Law Firm, LLC prides itself as a full-service firm. How does it accomplish this?
The Machin Law Firm, LLC: Some say, “two heads are better than one.” Since we are a husband and wife legal team, we are able to both double our knowledge base but also double our effort for our clients. We each focus on different legal areas and work on mastering those individual areas daily, but we also learn elements of each other’s respective concentrations. Using this approach, we are considered a full-service firm as we can handle all areas of the law and can provide comprehensive legal representation to our clients on any and all matters they may have. This helps our clients by allowing them to feel confident that all of their ranging legal matters can be addressed by our law firm as opposed to hiring different attorneys for each different issue.
Patch: What are some of The Machin Law Firm's core values?
The Machin Law Firm, LLC: Commitment. Ethics. Service. These are a few of the pillars of The Machin Law Firm. We strive to provide a fresh perspective and innovative service to each of our clients and our community while remaining true to our core values. We commit ourselves fully to each and every legal matter, remain dedicated to the highest standard of ethics and strive to provide excellent client service. These values serve as the foundation of our firm.
Patch: The Machin Law Firm, LLC is currently based in Rockville, but serves clients throughout the state. What is your outlook for the future?
The Machin Law Firm, LLC: We would hope to expand our practice in the future and become a larger “one-stop legal shop.” It is our goal to continue our community practice locally and reach more individuals and business across the state of Maryland, but also to grow in the District of Columbia in the near future.
Patch: How are you involved in the community?
The Machin Law Firm, LLC: We are very active and involved in our community locally and across the state of Maryland. We sponsor and usually set up our firm’s booth at local events around the county. We also provide pro bono services to our veterans and other service men and women across the state of Maryland.
