MoCo House Fire Causes $1M Damage, Fire Officials Say

A fire started by a grill on the deck of a Derwood home spread to two neighboring homes Sunday and caused an estimated $1 million damage.

DERWOOD, MD — A fire started by a grill on the deck of a Derwood home spread to two neighboring homes Sunday and caused an estimated $1 million damage, according to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services.

The accidental fire in the 8100 block of Pepper Ridge Way started on the outside of a single-family house, and was caused by issues with a grill and electrical wiring, fire department spokesman Pete Piringer said.

The blaze rapidly spread to the upper floors of the home.

A family of four was displaced, no injuries were reported.

The department said 75 firefighters responded to the fire, the initial call for help was reported just before 7 a.m.
