Montgomery County Seeks Nominations for Humanitarian and Children of the Dream Awards

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, MD - The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Committee announce the call for nominations for the 2017 Annual Humanitarian Award and the Children of the Dream Awards presented at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration on Monday, January 16, 2017 at 3:30 p.m. The annual tribute and musical celebration will be held at The Music Center at Strathmore, 5301 Tuckerman La., North Bethesda. The theme for this year’s program is “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”
“Every day we have thousands of people contributing their time, talents, energy and resources to make Montgomery County such a wonderful place to live,” said County Executive Isiah Leggett. “We want to recognize and salute these individuals for their outstanding examples of uplifting community service.”
The Humanitarian Award will be presented to a member of our community who has dedicated his or her life to advancing the dignity of every member of our community. Their efforts consistently served to uplift and inspire and their personal qualities imitate those of Dr. King.

The Children of the Dream Awards are annually presented to one male and one female high school student, or high school group or club, who demonstrate outstanding character and community and school involvement. This year’s recipient must also show how their efforts fostered the importance of social justice in our community.

In addition, the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Literary Award will be presented to the top three winners from throughout the County. Students in grades K-12 are eligible to participate. There will also be a Visual Arts Show with student artwork on display. The deadline to receive nominations is December 16. More information and nomination forms for the awards can be found on the Office of Human Rights website.

Specific criteria concerning the Visual Arts Show will be available on the website as well as through consultation with Art teachers in area schools.
