📰 News we're reading

1. Bitter cold triggers water main breaks throughout region (fox5dc.com) — A major water main break on Elizabeth Street in Rockville is one of nearly 300 pipe breaks WSSC Water has handled since late November, driven by sharply colder Potomac River temperatures. With many pipes over 50 years old, officials warn repairs can take several hours and are asking Rockville-area customers for patience as crews work through the surge in breaks.

2. 3 displaced by large house fire days before Christmas (wusa9.com) — A Rockville-area family and their dog are displaced after a major fire heavily damaged their Beaver Terrace home, though everyone escaped safely and no injuries were reported. About 85 firefighters battled the flames in frigid temperatures. Officials are still determining the cause and are urging Rockville residents to be extra cautious with heating equipment during the winter months.

3. New Law Requires 2-Weeks Notice Before Eviction (mymcmedia.org) — Montgomery County just expanded eviction protections, now requiring landlords to give renters at least 14 days’ notice before an eviction, with the bill signed in Rockville. County leaders say the change will help prevent homelessness and give both tenants and agencies more time to intervene, especially as evictions have risen sharply in recent years.

4. Woman injured in Rockville stabbing; suspect in custody (dcnewsnow.com) — A woman was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries after a late-night stabbing on Wild Rose Lane in Rockville, and another woman is in custody, police say. Officers also report the suspect tried but failed to assault a second person. Both women were taken to the hospital, and investigators have not yet released the suspect’s identity or any charges.

5. Vera Weigel Degenhardt, 92, Travis-Noe Funeral Home (ktvo.com) — Rockville readers may recognize the Degenhardt family, as Vera’s daughter Gail Battle lives here while mourning her mother’s passing at age 92. Vera built a life of service in Maryland, working for the NSA and University of Maryland and advocating for people with disabilities. Services will be held in early January in Kirksville, Missouri.
