New 'Fallen Hometown Heroes' Database Honors MOCO Veterans

A new Montgomery County database lists the names, branch of service, rank, photos and more of local veterans who died while serving.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, MD — A new online tribute to veterans will allow residents to learn more about people from Montgomery County who died while serving United States, the Montgomery County Commission on Veterans Affairs announced.

“Fallen Hometown Heroes" aims to include the following information about veterans on their tribute pages: name of service member, a photo, branch of service and rank, years of service, era served, brief description of service, their connection to Montgomery County and the name of the person submitting information.

“It seems that every day we are reminded of how our freedom is so special, and throughout the history of our nation, some special men and women have given their lives to protect that freedom,” said Wayne Miller, a Vietnam veteran and chair of the County Commission on Veterans Affairs, in a news release. “The Commission on Veterans Affairs wanted residents of all ages to know more about these people and our Fallen Heroes website is a great way to learn their fascinating and heroic stories.”

The website has tabs dividing the veterans' service eras, labeled as World War I, World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, Gulf War, and the Global War on Terror.

“Montgomery County is forever indebted to the men and women who served and gave their life in protection of our freedoms and liberty,” said County Executive Marc Elrich in the news release.

The Montgomery County Commission on Veterans Affairs is still inviting new submissions to the tribute. Friends and family members of service members who died while serving can fill out a Google form to submit or direct questions to the commission.
