Rockville's New Red Light Camera Grace Period is Over

Ticketing at Rockville's three new red light camera locations begins today

UPDATED—Drivers in Rockville take note: Rockville police will begin issuing tickets at its three new red light camera locations today.

Monday ends the month-long grace period to allow the community to prepare for the new cameras, city officials announced. Red-light violators will be issued  $75 fines.

  • North Washington Street at Middle Lane
  • Park Road at North Stonestreet Avenue (westbound)
  • Gaither Road at Redland Boulevard (northbound)

Rockville has a total of eight red light cameras, which have been updated to also ticket drivers who improperly turn right on red lights.

According to police and city officials, cameras in other locations have proven effective, with the city experiencing an 80 percent drop in the number of violations in the first seven months since the new technology was implemented last fall.

  • North Washington Street at Beall Avenue (southbound)
  • West Gude Drive at Gaither Road  (westbound)
  • West Gude Drive at Research  Boulevard (eastbound)
  • West Gude Drive at Research  Boulevard (westbound)
  • Seven Locks Road at Fortune Terrace (northbound)

Locations for a ninth and 10th site are currently being evaluated, city officials said.

Red light camera violations do not result in points on the vehicle owner's driving record, similar to a parking ticket, and insurance companies cannot consider them when calculating insurance rates.
