RedGate Golf Course hosted the 41st edition of Rockville's annual tournament last weekend.

hosted a field of 96 golfers for the 41st Annual Rockville Open and City Championship on Friday and Saturday.

Tom Lonergan, 57, of Loudon County, VA, a “RedGate-regular,” won the Open Championship with a career-best final round of 70 (1-under-par) on Saturday.

Lonergan’s two-round total of 143 (1-over) bested many younger golfers, said Kieron Mooney, RedGate’s head PGA professional and general manager.

“That’s quite remarkable,” Mooney said. “It’s like a guy his age winning the British Open.”

Zhiwei Fu combined an opening round 77 with a 2-under 69 on Saturday to claim the City Championship, which is only open to city residents.

“The golfing community here in Rockville has a lot of Asian players,” Mooney said. “This is the first time ever an Asian has won a trophy of this magnitude in all of Montgomery County.”

Both champions were first-time winners.

The tournament is arranged into six flights with golfers grouped by handicap.

The majority of the field came from RedGate’s core group of regulars, Mooney said. Another 25 to 30 do not usually play RedGate except for the tournament, he said.

In recent years, the tournament has drawn some of the top amateurs from New York to North Carolina, Mooney said.

“This particular tournament is something to put on your resume, particularly if you win it,” he said. “The Rockville Open is a pretty significant amateur tournament.”

Winners received a trophy. Top finishers in both the Open Championship and the City Championship received a total of $1,800 in gift certificates for the RedGate pro shop. First-place finishers received a $125 certificate, second-place received a $100 certificate and third-place received a $75 certificate.

The tournament’s expenses are covered entirely by Rockville businesses, including ; , which catered the tournament; and multiple smaller sponsors.
