Pierzchala Seeks Re-election to the City Council

'Sustainable budgets are my passion,' incumbent councilman says.

Mark Pierzchala, a first-term city councilman, is running for re-election to the Rockville City Council.

Pierzchala announced in January’s “Rockville Reports” that he was seeking re-election.

“I am running for re-election because Rockville faces huge economic and budget challenges,” Pierzchala says on his campaign website. “Sustainable budgets are my passion. Rockville is strong financially and this Council has achieved balanced budgets. But we know that Federal, State, and County budget cuts, along with prolonged economic stagnation, give us unprecedented challenges.”

The city holds nonpartisan elections in odd-numbered years for the four seats on the City Council and for mayor. Election Day is Nov. 8. Pierzchala is one of eight candidates for the council.

“To the task of achieving budget sustainability, I bring knowledge, background, and skills that few others can match,” Pierzchala writes on his website. “I thoroughly understand our budget and finances and how our City services and programs relate to our economic health. I have shown that I ask the tough questions, analyze data, and make the hard choices. I make decisions based on facts.”

In the statement on the website, Pierzchala calls for private jobs “to replace government ones” and a welcoming business environment “so that the commercial sector can shoulder more of our tax burden to maintain services and programs.”

Pierzchala also asks voters to support him and , who is running for mayor.

“I support Piotr Gajewski for Mayor since he also understands budgets and knows how to work with people to make necessary and hard choices,” Pierzchala writes.

Pierzchala’s campaign website also includes answers to questions from community members and local publications and organizations.

He writes that he is voting for himself, Gajewski, , , and former Councilman .

Pierzchala calls on voters to support candidates who “understand budgets, economics, finances, and business,” as well as “Rockville's history, its neighborhoods, its residents and all of its sectors, and how to protect them.”

He also calls on voters to “look for candidates who have done their homework, who can understand complex issues, who can be civil to each other and to City Staff, and who will have the courage to propose solutions to our problems and challenges and not merely complain about them.”

A 15-year Rockville resident, Pierzchala was president of the Rockville Town Center Action team in 2008-2009. He also served on the College Gardens Civic Association, first as a block captain, then, from 2000-2002 as secretary and from 2004-2008 as president. He received Rockville’s Good Neighbor Award in 2007.

A Peace Corps veteran, Pierzchala is an environmentalist who is often seen riding his bike, outfitted with an American flag—and, as of late, a campaign sign—to and from council functions.
