UPDATE: Taj Mahal to Replace George Clinton as Sunday Headliner

Update, 12:55 p.m.:

Taj Mahal and the Trio will perform as Sunday's headlining act at Rockville's Hometown Holidays, replacing George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic after the funk legend was reportedly admitted to the hospital for a staph infection in his leg.

The city reported the lineup change in a news release on Friday afternoon. No reason was given for the cancellation.

A spokeswoman for the B.O.M.B. Festival, where Clinton was scheduled to perform on Saturday in Hartford, CT, said that appearance has also been canceled. 

Taj Mahal, a 1997 Grammy winner for the album "Senor Blues," boasts a career that spans more than four decades. His blues sound has come to incorporate music from West Africa, the Caribbean, Latin America, Europe and the Hawaiian islands.

George Clinton, who with his band Parliament Funkadelic is scheduled to take the main stage as the headlining act of Rockville's Hometown Holidays on Sunday night, has been hospitalized for a staph infection in his leg, TMZ.com reported Thursday.

Clinton, the legendary 69-year-old "Godfather of Funk," went for a routine checkup and the decision was made to admit him for treatment, Clinton's representative told TMZ.

"He will be just fine. Thank you for all your prayers and concerns," the representative told TMZ.

It was unclear early Friday morning whether the news would affect Clinton's status for Sunday's free concert.

Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic are scheduled to play at the B.O.M.B. Fest in Hartford, CT on Saturday night before traveling to Rockville for Sunday night's show.

Early Friday morning, a schedule on the B.O.M.B. Fest Web site had George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic slotted to take the second of three festival stages at 9 p.m. on Saturday. The band was not listed on the site's lineup of artists.
