Rockville Little Theatre Presents 'The Miracle Worker' Stage Play

Rockville Little Theatre continues its 69th season of classic plays starting Friday, Feb. 3.

From Rockville Little Theater: Rockville Little Theatre continues its 69th season with The Miracle Worker by William Gibson, the classic play based on Helen Keller’s autobiography, The Story of My Life. Directed by Laura W. Andruski and produced by Dean Fiala and Emily Mullin, the show opens Friday, Feb. 3 and runs through Sunday, Feb. 12 at the F. Scott Fitzgerald Theatre in Rockville.

The Miracle Worker is based on the incredible true story of friendship between a teacher, Annie Sullivan, and her deaf and blind student, Helen Keller. Set in Tuscumbia, Alabama, Helen contracts an illness at 18 months old that leaves her blind and deaf. Her parents, who pity and spoil Helen, are desperate to communicate with their disobedient and misunderstood daughter.

Helen’s parents hire a young Annie Sullivan, who was once blind herself, to give order to their daughter’s silent, unstructured life. After many battles and disciplined weeks together, Annie manages to break through the barrier of isolation and teach Helen the power of language, showing her what the world has to offer.

“I first came upon the story of Helen Keller and Annie Sullivan as a young girl. Having seen the Anne Bancroft and Patty Duke movie on late night TV, I was mesmerized by their performances and astounded to learn that the movie was based on actual events,” says director Laura W. Andruski.

Andruski says Helen and Annie led inspirational lives, and both serve as strong role models for young girls and boys.
