Education and Jobs Top Montgomery College's Agenda

Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and Governor Martin O'Malley to visit the school Aug. 23.

Job creation and education development top the agenda during an upcoming announcement on the Montgomery College Takoma Park/Silver Spring campus located on 7977 Georgia Avenue.

Governor Martin O'Malley (D), Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and the college's president Dr. DeRionne P. Pollard are among the leaders scheduled to unveil the ‘Discover Your Skills’ multimedia public affairs campaign Tuesday.

Officials will tour the college’s health sciences simulation labs and address how the expansion of the campaign by  provides better resources and job opportunities.

This event comes on the heels of newly released unemployment figures by the U.S Bureau of Labor statistics

In July, Maryland's unemployment rate increased to 7.2 percent which was significantly lower than the national rate of 9.1. Despite the state's unemployment rate increase, 8100 jobs were added to the economy.

In a statement, O'Malley said, "jobs can be created, but for businesses to create more jobs, government must do its job."

He said that he wants to "urge Congress to come together for the sake of our jobs recovery, and to find a balanced, fiscally responsible approach that maintains the modern investments needed to create jobs in this modern economy.”

While President Barack Obama is on vacation at Martha's Vineyard for the next nine days, he'll meet with his economic advisors. Obama plans to layout his overall plans to decrease the country's deficit and create more jobs.
