'Galentine's' Drive Collecting Bras, Underwear, Hygiene Products

SILVER SPRING, MD — A Silver Spring nonprofit is running a month-long drive for bras, underwear and menstrual products in the spirit of "Galentine's" Day.

Silver Spring Cares will have collection points from Feb. 1 to 28, and its efforts will support "I Support The Girls," which collects and distributes these types of donations, according to a news release.

“People rarely think to donate bras and menstrual hygiene products, and yet all womxn and teenage girls need these items," a statement from I Support The Girls says. "Bras are essential for a person's health, self-esteem, employment, and more. Menstrual products are expensive, and necessary every month for health and personal hygiene.”

Drop-Off Locations:

• AstroLab Brewing, 8216 Georgia Ave., Tuesday and Wednesday from 4 to 9 p.m., Thursday from 4 to 10 p.m., Friday and Saturday from noon to 10 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 8 p.m.
• El Golfo Restaurant, 8739 Flower Ave., Sunday to Thursday from 11 a.m to 10 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.
• GoBrent Realty, 914 Silver Spring Ave., Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
• Green Owl Design, 5303 Baltimore Ave. Suite 101, Wednesday to Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

"This drive is an excellent way for Silver Spring Cares to build on our efforts to help people experiencing homelessness, impoverishment, or distress to stand tall with dignity," said Mónica O’Malley de Castillo, Executive Director of Silver Spring Cares, in a statement. "These donations will allow someone to walk through the world comfortably. Such small gifts make a world of difference.”

Items to donate:

• New or gently used bras
• New underwear
• Sealed menstrual hygiene products (pads, liners, tampons, cups, reusables)
