1 Dead After Unmarked Police Car Hits Scooter In Silver Spring

A 74-year-old Kensington man is dead after his scooter collided with an unmarked police car in Silver Spring, police said.

(Updated at 11:50 a.m. Thursday) WHEATON, MD — An unmarked Montgomery County Police cruiser collided with a motor scooter in a fatal crash in Wheaton, leaving an elderly man dead Wednesday night.

The crash occurred just before 9:45 p.m. at Veirs Mill Road at Norris Drive, police said. The decedent has been identified as Loreto Andal Canubas, 74, of Kensington. The on-duty Montgomery County police officer—identified as Officer Robert Farmer—is assigned to the Police Community Action Team and has worked for MCPD for about eight-and-a-half years, police said.

Investigation has revealed that Canubas was driving a Sunra Motor Scooter on Monterrey Drive at Viers Mill Road and attempted to cross over.

The scooter and the cruiser then crashed in the eastbound lanes of Veirs Mill Road, police said. Multiple witnesses remained on the scene and provided information to investigators.

Canubas suffered life-threatening injuries and was transported to Suburban Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries, police said. Farmer was not seriously injured.
