Metro Transit Center Delayed Until June

The transit center is 90 percent complete, according to Montgomery County's officials.

The Paul S. Sarbanes Silver Spring Transit Center was set to open after a two-month inspection by Washington Metro Transit Authority (WMATA) and Metro Transit Authority (MTA) in early 2012, but the deadline has been extended.

The project which costs over $100 million dollars won't open on time, after concerns about long-term stability of the structure, according to a Washington Post report.

  • Along Colesville Road, install an underground ventilation system and groundwork.
  • Rexamine the reinforced steel structures on the third floor because they are thin at eight points, which could cause issues in the long-term.

When the transit center opens it will feature 32 bus bays for WMATA Metrobus, 54 Kiss & Ride spaces, Montgomery County Ride-On, MTA regional commuter bus, Van-Go shuttle, Inter-city Buses, and University of Maryland Shuttle.
