News in Review: Crime in Silver Spring Highest in the District and Update on the New Silver Library Project

This week in Silver Spring, new library project moves forward, Noel Paul Stookey set to perform, Patch crime summary map and sports highlights.

1. Silver Spring is designated as the highest crime district in the area. Montgomery County Police Chief J. Thomas Manger met with community members at a meeting to discuss two priority initiatives to combat crime in Silver Spring. The first would include adding a third beat to the Route 29 corridor between Briggs Chaney Road and White Oak, an area Manger identified as the highest crime area in the county.

2. The new Silver Spring Library project on Wayne Ave and Fenton St. is moving along. Official construction for the Silver Spring Library will start after the utility work is complete, which includes water and sewage work. Montgomery County Spokeswoman Esther Bowring tells Patch that "the building is in the Design Development phase."

3. Looking to learn something new about Black History. This month the county libraries features a variety of events to join.

5. In sports, Montgomery Blair High School hosts a discussion around athlete concussions. The hour long discussion hosted by Girls basketball coach Erin Conley explained how concussions can affect balance, memory and emotional stability, among other things. It is important that these symptoms are treated fully before an athlete attempts to return to play.
