Silver Spring Company Ranks On 2018 Fortune 500

A Silver Spring company made the latest Fortune 500 list of the largest corporations in the U.S.

SILVER SPRING, MD — Three companies from Montgomery County have made the latest Fortune 500 list of the largest corporations in the U.S., and one of them is headquartered in Silver Spring.

Fortune Magazine ranks the largest corporations by revenue in the annual list. In all, these companies have $12.8 trillion in revenues, $1 trillion in profits and 28.2 million employees worldwide. They make up two-thirds of the country's gross domestic product (GDP). The rankings are based on 2017 revenue.

Here are the Montgomery County companies on the list and their annual revenue:

No. 59: Lockheed Martin, Bethesda, $51 billion

  • "Lockheed reported its effective tax rate at 14.9% for the first quarter of this year, compared with 23.8% a year ago. Investors have noticed: The company’s market cap is up nearly 25% year over year," Fortune says.

No. 127: Marriott International, Bethesda, $22.9 billion

  • The Fortune report says: "The hotel franchise operates more than 6,500 properties in 127 countries and territories including brands like the Ritz-Carlton, Renaissance Hotels, and Fairfield Inn & Suites."

No. 409, Discovery, Silver Spring, $6.9 billion

  • The entertainment company delivers more than 8,000 hours of original programming each year with a portfolio that includes Investigation Discovery, Food Network, TLC, OWN, HGTV and Discovery Channel," the report says.

Discovery announced in January that they will move their headquarters from downtown Silver Spring to New York City in 2019.

There are currently about 1,300 people working for Discovery in Maryland, Bethesda Magazine reports.
