Snack Cake Recalled In MD May Contain Peanut Allergen: FDA

Maryland consumers with an allergy or sensitivity to peanuts will need to check their pantry for a recalled snack cake.

MARYLAND — An undeclared peanut ingredient has caused the parent company of Tastykake, a packaged bakery brand sold in Maryland, to recall some of its products because of the safety risk to those with allergies and sensitivities.

Flowers Foods Inc. is voluntarily recalling certain “Tastykake Chocolate Kandy Kakes” which were also sold to customers in Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia.

Certain packages of the Chocolate Kandy Kakes contained the Peanut Butter Kandy Kakes, said the company in its recall, which was announced by the Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday.

Those with a peanut allergy or severe sensitivity to the product may have a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume the product, said the FDA.

No illnesses or incidents have been reported to date in Maryland or the other states where these products were sold, officials added.

The affected products have an “Enjoy By” date of June 5, 2023 on the side of the package, and UPC code 0 25600 00225 4. Customers who have bought the affected Chocolate Kandy Kakes may discard them or return them to the place of purchase for a full refund, said the FDA.

Flowers Foods is headquartered in Thomasville, Georgia, and produces other bakery brands such as Nature's Own, Dave's Killer Bread, Wonder, and Canyon Bakehouse.
