Report: Baltimore County Teachers Struggle with Common Core

Baltimore County teachers are struggling to implement new Common Core curriculum—the local version is still being written—often causing teachers to work as late as 10 p.m., according to the Baltimore Sun.

Superintendent S. Dallas Dance told the newspaper he was aware of the problems but was confident the school systems would get the kinks ironed out.

“We are building the plane as we fly it,” Dance told the Sun, adding, “but lets be clear our passengers are safe.”

The Common Core curriculum, which is designed to set unified standards for all states, is part of President Barack Obama’s administration’s Race to the Top program.

Last year county schools announced they would be implementing Common Core to help apply common standards for English language arts and mathematics for all schools kindergarten through 12th grade. 

Complaints and concerns from parents about Common Core received added attention last week when a parent from Ellicott City was arrested during a regional meeting about the standards in Towson.
