'Bomb Cyclone' Storm Wind Warning Expanded: Timeline, What To Expect

MASSACHUSETTS — A High Wind Warning was expanded to include all of eastern Massachusetts as the state braces for a "bomb cyclone" storm that could bring winds up to 60 miles per hour and up to 4 inches of rain to the region later Wednesday afternoon and Wednesday night.

The National Weather Service issued the updated warning on Wednesday morning beginning at 3 p.m. that extends all the way to Route 495 north and west of the city and throughout all of southeastern Massachusetts, Cape Cod and the Islands.

The warning calls for southerly winds roaring at 50 to 60 miles per hour with outages and property damage possible.

A High Wind Advisory is in effect for points north and west of Worcester with wind gusts expected between 40 and 50 mph.

The National Weather Service said a widespread 2 to 3 inches of rain is expected with some areas getting up to 4 inches within a short window late Wednesday afternoon into early Wednesday night. The NWS said the torrential downpours could cause localized stream flooding and flooding in poor-drainage urban areas.

Temperatures will rise throughout the day as a warm front passes through the region with highs in the 60s after many started the day with a cold rain and temperatures just north of freezing.

Temperatures are expected to fall rapidly overnight with a flash freeze possible. Highs on Thursday will be back in the 30s.

AccuWeather meteorologists said this storm will include characteristics of bombogenesis — or a bomb cyclone — with rapidly decreasing pressure increasing the risk of damaging wind gusts, thunderstorms and even tornadoes.

"Some rain will act like a giant firehose and organize into an intense north-to-south, west-to-east crawling squall with gusty winds," AccuWeather Chief On-Air Meteorologist Bernie Rayno said on Tuesday.

The High Wind Warning was declared for affected parts of Massachusetts beginning at 3 p.m. and lasting until 1 a.m.

"Damaging winds will blow down trees and power lines," the NWS said in a statement. "Power outages are expected. Travel will be difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles.

Remain in the lower levels of your home during the windstorm, and avoid windows. Watch for falling debris and tree limbs. Use caution if you must drive."
