BOSTON, MA — Across the country, the rate of fatal crashes is rising, increasing by nearly 10 percent from 2020 to 2022.

But according to one study, Boston is bucking that trend as the city with the best drivers. Boston has the second-lowest number of fatal car accidents (3.26 per 100,000 city residents), the second-lowest number of fatal accidents involving speeding (0.77 per 100,000 city residents), and the third-lowest number of fatal accidents involving a drunk driver (0.95 per 100,000 city residents).

The study comes from Forbes Advisor and compared the 50 most-populated cities across five metrics. Data for these metrics comes from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Fatality and Injury Reporting System Tool. For each metric, Forbes took a five-year average, using data from 2017 to 2021.
