Can Massachusetts Slang Capture Dictionary.Com Bracket Crown?

Dictionary.com has released its regional slang bracket for 2025. Can words like "bubbler," "frappe," or "grinder" take home the win?

MASSACHUSETTS — New Englanders have a unique vocabulary, but is it as impressionable as slang from the Bay Area or the Midwest?

Dictionary.com is putting that to the test in its 2025 regional slang bracket, which opens for voting today.

Starting today at 3 p.m., people across the country can cast a vote for the most important regional slang. The bracket and voting can be found here.

Round one voting is today and the field will narrow until March 8, when championship round voting starts and continues through March 10. A champion will be crowned on March 11.

There are 32 regional words in the bracket, which begins with eight words trying to advance out of their respective region.

In the Northeast, early matchups include:

  • Bubbler vs. Grinder
  • Jimmies vs. Rotary
  • Nor'easter vs. Frappe
  • Clicker vs. Carriage

The winner of the Northeast section of the bracket will face the winner of the West, which includes popular phrases like "hyphy," "gnarly," and "stoked."
