MASSACHUSETTS — Let's just get it out in the open: St. Patrick's Day is a drinking holiday for many people.

With that in mind, hydration should be at the front of minds for people who plan to indulge with Irish whiskey, Irish stouts, Irish lagers or whatever beverage they choose. You may be thinking about how much water you should drink, whether or not you should splurge on electrolyte packages or the benefits of coconut water.

But have you thought about pickle juice?

Ok, so it's technically pickle brine, but Claussen has announced a Friday launch of their new "Just the Brine" product available via Gopuff in Boston ahead of St. Patrick's Day weekend.

Company officials said they were inspired by the popular diet cola and pickle juice trend in 2024 and now, six months later, we've got bottle pickle juice.

“After seeing the overwhelming response from fans when we teased the concept last year and all
the creative ways people use our brine, we knew we had to make this product a reality,” said
Caroline Sheehey, Brand Manager Claussen. “Whether you’re mixing up a tangy cocktail or reaching for a next-day refresh, Just The Brine is here to bring the same flavor and experience you already know and love from our delicious pickles – now in liquid form.”

Starting Friday, "Just The Brine" six-packs, including three bottles for “pickling” and three for “unpickling”, will be available via Gopuff in New York, Chicago and Boston.

The city choice was strategic, as officials said they chose the three locations because of the "deep Irish heritage and legendary celebrations, including Chicago’s iconic, green-dyed river, Boston’s historic Southie parade and New York’s vibrant bar crawls."

There are benefits to drinking pickle juice for hydration, and athletes have been consuming it during games and practices for years.

According to a Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise study, men experienced faster relief from muscle cramps caused by dehydration after consuming pickle brine. (Thank you, vinegar.)

Pickle juice also contains sodium and potassium, which can be especially beneficial for lengthy, difficult exercise, or physical activity done in hot weather.

Does drinking too much to celebrate St. Patrick's Day fall under that category? Not necessarily, but hey, it can't hurt, right?
