MASSACHUSETTS — Just in time for summer, state agriculture officials are compiling the ultimate guide to ice cream in Massachusetts.

The state Dairy Promotion Board has put out a call for ice cream businesses from across the state to participate in the creation of an ice cream trail, a first-of-its kind resource for tourists and local. The state will make the ice cream trail list widely available this summer.

"This trail will not only promote local businesses, but also celebrate the Massachusetts dairy industry, support travel and tourism, and excite ice cream enthusiasts everywhere," the state Department of Agriculture says.

Massachusetts is already one of the biggest players in the ice cream business as the birthplace of Friendly's and Baskin-Robbins, and the home base of the Hoodsie inventor, Hood. The state is also home to scores of beloved ice cream stands, serving the classic New England combo of fried food and soft serve.

Ice cream makers who want to participate can respond to the agriculture department's request for information here. Submissions are due by May 13.
