Here Are The Businesses That Opened, Closed In MA In 2025
From an influx of pharmacy closings to the new retail favorites, here are the Bay State's biggest business stories in 2025.
MASSACHUSETTS —Many businesses closed in Massachusetts during the past year, but there's also plenty of good news too, including the opening of unique shops, grocers, and more.
Below are many of the business openings and closings in the Bay State that Patch covered in 2025.
Grocery Store Openings, Closings
Trader Joe’s opened two new locations in the Bay State, in West Roxbury and Newton.

Japanese superstore chain Hashi Market announced it is expanding to the Boston area with two new locations coming soon. It is slated to launch new spots on 1341 Beacon St. in the Coolidge Corner neighborhood of Brookline and 580 Massachusetts Ave. in Cambridge.
H-Mart opened a location in Somerville's Davis Square back in January.

Big Y opened in Westborough at 290 Turnpike Rd., on Aug. 14.
Costco opened a location in Sharon earlier this year at 160 Old Post Rd.
Market Basket reopened in North Andover in August. The previous storefront closed as part of a plan to have Kohl's and Market Basket switch spots in the 350 Winthrop Ave. shopping plaza.
Retail Openings, Closings
Starbucks closed five locations in Greater Boston, including two in Somerville, two in Cambridge and one in the city’s South End neighborhood.
The Cheese Shop of Salem, a beloved cheese-and-wine shop, closed in September. The businesses cited rising costs and a desire to "close while things feel good and true to our values."
A United Parcel Service facility in South Boston was one of the 73 facilities that closed earlier this year. The Summer Street facility closed permanently and cut jobs on May 23.

Claire's closed seven stores in Massachusetts, including locations in Northborough, Cambridge, North Attleborough, Berlin, Peabody and Boston.
All Joann locations in the Bay State closed after the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy twice in less than a year.
Smithland Pet & Garden Centers closed all its locations after over four decades in business, including six in Massachusetts: Agawam, Hadley, Ludlow, Northampton, Ware, and Westfield.
At Home officially closed two stores in September after the retailer filed for bankruptcy in June. The locations were in Shrewsbury and Dedham.

Elyse Fine Jewelers, a jewelry store that's been around for over 25 years, will close in Reading. The store is located at 95 Main St., Suite 3.
L.L. Bean opened a location at Fresh Market Plaza in Framingham in October.
Kendra Scott, a lifestyle and accessories brand, opened a store at the Burlington Mall in June. The store is located next to J. Crew.
Ulta Beauty, the nation's largest beauty retailer, opened in November at Wrentham Village Premium Outlets.
Ollie's Bargain Outlet moved into the former Big Lots location in Fitchburg. The retailer has other stores in Worcester, Plymouth and New Bedford.
Rothy’s, the lifestyle brand known for its shoes and accessories, opened a storefront at Legacy Place in Dedham back in September.
Golf Galaxy, a sporting goods store, celebrated a three-day grand opening at Wayside Commons in Burlington this fall.

Aritizia opened at Legacy Place in Dedham in July. The opening marked the clothing retailer's third storefront in Massachusetts.
Eleveno, a pickleball facility in Foxborough, opened earlier this month. The facility will be located in a space most recently occupied by Christmas Tree Shops in Patriot Place’s South Marketplace, located next to Trader Joe’s and RH Outlet.
Salt & Sage Medspa opened its doors in Framingham, at 235 Walnut St., in December.
The luxury notebook store Moleskine officially opened on Nov. 1 at 64 Harbor Way in Boston’s Seaport neighborhood. It will offer its signature notebooks, planners, bags, and accessories in the new location.
Concrete Collection, a vintage thrift store which opened in 2023 at Midtown Mall in Worcester, opened at a new location at the White City shopping center in Shrewsbury. The upscale thrift spot was among the businesses damaged in a September fire in the building.

Ten Trees Books, the independent Natick bookstore, reopened in its new location in late October. It is now located at 29 N. Main St.
Inspired Closets Greater Boston opened its third Massachusetts showroom in Natick in October. The closet design company is located at 929 Worcester St.
Pharmacy Openings, Closings
Rite Aid was closing all of its Bay State stores. The pharmacy chain announced on its website that it had gone out of business in October. The latest stores to close include locations in Clinton, Fall River, New Bedford and Greenfield.

Walgreens closed some of its Massachusetts locations. The pharmacy chain closed locations in Norton, Marlborough, Fairhaven, West Springfield, Easthampton, Cambridge, Boston, Haverhill, Methuen and Dorchester.
