MASSACHUSETTS — The Halloween candy is still fresh, and it's snowing in Massachusetts.

Some parts of the state Wednesday morning saw the first snowfall of the year. Snow accumulations were seen in the Berkshires and far northern Worcester County while rain swept across southeastern parts of the state with temperatures below freezing in many areas.

Of course, it's not unusual for the state to see snow around Halloween. In 2011, an early snowstorm struck just before Halloween, covering the state in snow between 4 and 20 inches.

An El Niño climate pattern might mean a snowier winter for Massachusetts compared to the relatively mild 2022-23 season, the National Weather Service’s Climate Prediction Center said in an updated U.S. Winter Outlook released in mid-October.

The average snowfall should be around 50 inches in a given winter, according to weather records. The Boston area only saw about 11-1/2 inches last winter, one of the least snowy winters on record.
