Flour Sold In MA Recalled Due To Salmonella Risk: FDA
The manufacturer voluntarily recalled this popular brand of bleached and unbleached flour after tests revealed the presence of salmonella.
MASSACHUSETTS — Check your pantry for flour that may be part of a nationwide recall.
General Mills issued a voluntary recall of some of its bleached and unbleached bags of Gold Medal brand flour because testing revealed the potential presence of salmonella.
The recall affects 2-pound, 5-pound and 10-pound bags of Gold Medal Unbleached and Bleached All Purpose Flour with a “better if used by” dates of March 27, 2024, and March 28, 2024. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said that Salmonella Infantis was discovered during sampling of the product, in a notice posted Friday.

Customers who discard the flour should contact General Mills Consumer Relations at 1-800-230-8103 for information about reimbursement. The FDA also advised that salmonella can be killed during the cooking process, if consumers elect to keep the products.
"Salmonella Infantis is killed by heat through baking, frying, sautéing or boiling products made with flour. All surfaces, hands and utensils should be properly cleaned after contact with flour or dough," the Friday bulletin said.

In general, this strain of salmonella can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and fever. Symptoms can begin anywhere between a few hours and a few days after eating contaminated food. Illnesses can last for a few days.
