Here's How MA Stacks Up On Unemployment

Massachusetts ranks about middle of the pack when it comes to unemployment claims as the holiday season gets into full swing. The new analysis comes from personal finance website WalletHub, which placed the Bay State at No. 17.

Massachusetts did have a 16 percent decrease in unemployment claims this week compared to the previous week. That number marks a 22 percent decrease from the same period in 2024. Overall, there are 131 unemployment claims per 100,000 workers.

"Unemployment in the U.S. has remained relatively stable over the past year, though it has experienced small fluctuations and a slight overall rise," according to WalletHub. "The job market is still in good shape, as new unemployment claims decreased by 12.4% week-over-week on November 24."

WalletHub noted that 19 states had steady or worse rates of unemployment claims compared to the previous year.

To identify where unemployment claims are decreasing the most, WalletHub compared the 50 states and the District of Columbia based on changes in unemployment claims for several key benchmark weeks. The study also considered the number of claims per 100,000 people in the labor force.
