'Excessive Rainfall' In MA Predicted For Weekend: Weather Service

It's spring, so it's not exactly unexpected. But the National Weather Service says there's the potential for localized flooding.

MASSACHUSETTS — These spring showers might be enough to drown May flowers.

Multiple forecasts are predicting two big rain events for Massachusetts over the weekend. With rainfall amounts in the 1-inch range, there's also the possibility of local and urban stream flooding, according to the National Weather Service.

The first storm could swing through starting Saturday morning. A second storm will start Sunday evening and could continue through Monday.

"[R]ainfall amounts of 0.5-1 inch will be possible. The [NOAA Weather Prediction Center] has placed SNE within a marginal risk of excessive rainfall on Saturday," the weather service said in a forecast discussion Wednesday morning.

According to AccuWeather, the second storm set to hit Sunday and continue through Monday could be more impactful, becoming a more intense bomb cyclone.

"As the storm moves along and strengthens, a secondary storm may form along the mid-Atlantic coast, which could accelerate winds and enhance the impacts of rain, above-normal tides and rough seas and surf from the mid-Atlantic region to New England," AccuWeather said.

The rainfall will also be accompanied by a cooling trend thanks to a slow-moving low pressure system coming in from the Great Lakes.
