How MA Residents Can Get $40 When Buying An Air Conditioner

With temperatures in the 90s in Massachusetts, you might be thinking of buying a new AC unit. Here's how to get $40 back.

MASSACHUSETTS — Temperatures in some parts of Massachusetts will soar into the mid-90s by Friday, and that sweltering heat might spur you to shop for a new air conditioner.

If you want a $40 discount on your new AC unit, look for the Energy Star badge. Mass Save, the energy efficiency program sponsored by local utilities, is offering rebates on certain AC models that use less energy.

Air conditioners with the Energy Star rating are about 10 percent more efficient, according to Mass Save, with design features to prevent cool air from leaking out of your house.

There are a few restrictions on the rebate program. You can only get it if you're a Cape Light, JPE, Eversource, National Grid, or Unitil customer, and only two rebates per household are available per calendar year. Residents can apply for the rebate for units purchased between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2023, and must submit paperwork by Jan. 31, 2024.

Temperatures in Massachusetts will peak at about 90 on the low end in Boston on Friday, but up to 5 degrees higher heading toward Worcester and Springfield, according to the National Weather Service.
