What's Happening In MA For National Trails Day 2023: Hiking, Volunteering

The first Saturday in June is National Trails Day. Here are activities and volunteer opportunities in Massachusetts.

MASSACHUSETTS — Conservation groups across Massachusetts will celebrate National Trails Day this weekend, an annual "day of service for hometown trails and the people who love them," according to the American Hiking Society.

National Trails Day typically takes place on the first Saturday in June, but local groups are marking the day across the weekend. Here are some events and volunteer opportunities you can join this weekend:

Appalachian Mountain Club

The AMC is sponsoring volunteer opportunities across the state, but is also tracking volunteer events across the state, including in the area between Worcester and Boston.

American Hiking Society

The AHS started the trails day holiday, and the society's website allows visitors to search for events near them by entering a zip code or community name.

Barnstable Land Trust

A 40th anniversary weekend of special events and programs, including the Hike Barnstable Challenge starts on National Trails Day. The three-month self-paced challenge encourages people of all ages and abilities to explore 40 miles of Barnstable trails, learn about the health and wellness benefits of walking outdoors, and discover new spaces and places that are protected in Barnstable.

Mt. Greylock

Head to the state's tallest mountain for a group hike along a section of the Appalachian Trail.

National Trails Day Framingham

Explore three trails in the MetroWest city on Saturday and Sunday, including Morency Woods, the Macomber Reservation and the Carol Getchell Trail. RSVP here.

Monoosnoc Ridge Hike

For a bit of a challenge, join this 8-mile hike in Leominster. The hike spans Route 2 to Sholan Farms near Sterling.

Bay State Trail Riders Association

This equestrian group will mark trails day on June 11 with a group ride through Douglas State Forest.
