MASSACHUSETTS — If you don't like the weather in New England, wait about three days.

After record-breaking warmth on Saturday, most of Massachusetts will be in for a significant snow event beginning late Monday night. The National Weather Service issued a winter storm watch Saturday for almost the entire state, excluding the outer Cape.

The forecast: 8 to 12 inches in Worcester and parts of Middlesex County, 4 to 6 inches closer to Boston and the South Shore, according to the weather service.

"Total snowfall accumulations of 6-12 inches is possible. Hazardous travel conditions possible for both the Tuesday morning and afternoon commute," the weather service said Saturday afternoon.

Snow has been in the forecast for Tuesday for about a week, but there was a lot of uncertainty about how the nor'easter would play out. On Friday, AccuWeather predicated a mix of snow and rainfall for southern New England, but that still might lead to several inches of snow locally.

"The way the cold air will invade the storm it appears the best bet for several inches of snow will be from northern Pennsylvania to southeastern upstate New York, and southern and central New England, especially from northeastern Pennsylvania on to the east from Monday night to Tuesday evening," AccuWeather said in a Friday forecast.

But by Saturday, forecasters had enough data to confidently predict a meaningful storm for the region.

"Confidence has continued to increase that southern New England will experience an impactful winter storm late Monday night through Tuesday," the weather service said Saturday.

There will still be some spring-like weather to enjoy before the snow falls. Temperatures on Sunday and Monday will be around 50 across the eastern half of the state. The region will be in for much colder temperatures next week compared to the weekend. Daytime highs are projected to only reach into the low-to-mid 30s all week.
