MASSACHUSETTS — This week will truly embody the "if you don't like the weather, wait five minutes" New England aphorism.

The entire state will see summery days Monday and Tuesday, with the latter being the "pick of the week," according to the National Weather Service, due to the combination of balmy temperatures and clear skies.

Highs will reach near 80 in Worcester on Tuesday, 70 in the Boston area and slightly cooler out on the Cape. Many places, especially inland, will catch temperatures in the low 70s on Monday.

But then the ghost of winter returns to Massachusetts. Temperatures will inch down each day starting Wednesday, with daytime highs starting in the 60s and trending down into the low 50s. Overnight lows will be in the 40s — and even closer to the 30s in the Worcester area.

There's also rain in the forecast for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, but as of Monday, forecasters hadn't settled on specifics.

"Hence, rain likely at times, although periods of dry weather too. Unfortunately, given model spread, too difficult at this time range to nail down exact timing of specifics," the weather service said Monday morning.

The highest chance of rain appears to be Friday, with about 50 percent probability during the daytime hours.
