ACTON, MA — As the first major snow storm of the season rolled in on Wednesday night, Acton-Boxborough students started an online petition to bring back traditional snow days.

The district canceled in-person classes for Thursday, as most schools did in light of the four to 11 inches of snow forecasted. But this didn't mean school was canceled as remote classes were being held instead.

Two ABRHS seniors, Caroline Roach and Nathan Kleinschmidt, created a Change.org petition for the district to bring back snow days.

"Snow days have long been an important and cherished part of the primary and secondary educational experience. Having an unexpected break from school provides students with much needed relief from rigorous school work," the petition reads.

The petition was created on Wednesday night and already has over 2,500 signatures, halfway to its goal of 5,000 signatures.

Acton-Boxborough still has some semblance of a snow day, but it's only instituted when there is a widespread power outage or power outages are anticipated. A traditional snow day will be added on to the end of the school year and will be scheduled as an in-person school day.
