Andover Police Warn Residents About Crypto, Wire Transfer Scams

The police department has issued advice about how residents can avoid being the victim of a range of scams.

ANDOVER, MA — Andover police are warning residents about a scam involving wire transfers and Bitcoin deposits.

One of the scams involves the "IRS" demanding immediate payment for taxes. Another is a sweepstakes swindle, where you're told you won a contest or lottery and must pay cash up front for taxes on the winnings.

Police noted that only scammers will demand payment in cryptocurrency and that "no legitimate business is going to demand you send cryptocurrency in advance — not to buy something, and not to protect your money. That's always a scam."
