Election Result: Nguyen Re-Elected in 18th Essex District

The incumbent Democrat was re-elected in the Andover-Boxford-North Andover-Tewksbury state rep. race.

MASSACHUSETTS — Incumbent Democrat Tram Nguyen won re-election in the 18th Essex District state representative race against Republican Jeff Dufour, according to unofficial results.

Nguyen carried all four towns in the district — Andover, Boxford, North Andover and Tewksbury. She took over 60 percent of the two-party vote.

Nguyen, an Andover attorney, unseated four-term representative Jim Lyons in 2018 in a race that caught the attention of some national Democrats, including former President Barack Obama.

Dufour, a Tewksbury resident who works in information systems and management and is running for his first elected office, has not drawn similar attention from national Republicans. He instead what he called a "small grass roots campaign" as Nguyen has held a commanding fundraising lead throughout the campaign.

Both candidates listed the economy as among their priorities, but differed on other priorities.

"The economic impact to Massachusetts associated with the COVID-19 shutdowns is devastating," Dufour said. "As the next State Representative, I will focus on reviving the economy, holding the line against taxes, and strengthening public safety."

"I am seeking re-election because I want to continue the work I've done to better the lives of the people in this district," Nguyen said. "During my time in office, I have worked to improve the local economy, bring back funding to our local communities, tackle the opioid crisis, protect our climate, as well as remain accessible to all of my constituents."

With all precincts reporting, according to the Associated Press and the Andover, North Andover and Tewksbury town clerks. The incumbent is marked with an asterisk (*). If the race has been called, the winning candidate is in bold.

18th Essex District

Tram Nguyen (Democrat)* — 16,353 — 61.9 percent

Jeff Dufour (Republican) — 10,081 — 38.1 percent
