Flu Kills Massachusetts Girl In Haverhill

A Haverhill first-grader was the first child confirmed to be killed by the flu in Massachusetts so far this year.

HAVERHILL, MA — A Haverhill girl has died of a flu-related illness, officials announced Tuesday. The first-grader's death is the first confirmed case of a Massachusetts child dying of the flu this year, according to the state Department of Public Health.

"This is a tragic reminder of how serious the flu can be for some people,’’ said Public Health Commissioner Monica Bharel in a statement. "Every flu season is different, but every flu season is bad. This one arrived early and continues to spread, leading many people throughout the Commonwealth to get sick.’’
