We think it is critical that people suffering from substance abuse and addiction have a safe, discrete and comfortable environment where they can begin their journey to recovery. Mayflower has 48 beds for inpatient and residential treatment programs and offers a host of modern amenities designed to provide clients with the support, safety and privacy they need to begin taking back their lives from addiction.

Patch: What Makes Mayflower Detox different from other addiction programs in Massachusetts?

Dave Ray: One thing that makes Mayflower unique is that we are the first detox facility in Massachusetts to be purpose-built from the ground up in years. It's no secret that real estate is at a premium in Massachusetts, so many detox or addiction treatment programs begin life as part of an existing facility or as a retrofit of a property originally designed for another use.

Every decision during the design and building of the facility was made with the safety, comfort and privacy of our patients in mind. The result is a brand-new facility that provides world-class detox care to give patients the best opportunity to succeed in their recovery. We made sure that patients in both our detox and residential treatment programs have the resources and amenities to make their detox experience as safe, comfortable and discreet as possible.

Patch: Where does Mayflower Detox fit into the world of addiction treatment?

Dave Ray: Mayflower Recovery offers detox and residential recovery programs. Addiction treatment is often thought of as a continuum of care, and detoxification is the first step for virtually any type of substance abuse or addiction treatment program.

Detox is designed to help you break free from the toxic grip of addiction to drugs and alcohol and allow you to move ahead with your treatment more effectively. We offer two types of treatment to help patients begin their recovery: Acute Treatment Services, often called ATS or "Medically Monitored Detox," and Clinical Stabilization Services (CSS.)

Acute Treatment Services (ATS) are a safe and more comfortable way to begin a drug and alcohol detox because we help patients manage the symptoms of withdrawal. Patients detox under the careful eye of a team of experienced and compassionate doctors and addiction treatment professionals who can provide medical assistance and withdrawal medication when needed.

Clinical Stabilization Services (CSS) provide patients who have been through detox with support, therapy and education services to serve as a bridge from detox into your aftercare and drug and alcohol rehab programs.

Throughout their stay at Mayflower, each patient has a dedicated team of medical professionals, therapists, social and mental health workers and case managers. They work tirelessly to create a structured plan of care that is individualized to give the patient the best opportunity to succeed in recovery.

Patch: How do you see Mayflower Detox as part of the community?

David Ray: We know that addiction impacts the patient's mental, physical and psychological health, but the disease truly affects everyone around them as well. Addiction can take a toll on relationships, jobs and finances, and this causes a ripple effect that impacts an entire community.

Our patients are mothers, peewee hockey coaches, high school valedictorians and everyone in between. We constantly remind ourselves that when we treat the disease of addiction, we are also helping to heal a person who could be our neighbor, co-worker or friend. That's why it's so important for people to have world-class treatment options in their community.

We also love Wilmington because of its proximity to routes 128, I-93 and I-95. From here, we can be a resource to other communities in need from greater Boston, Southern New Hampshire and out into western Massachusetts.

Patch: How challenging was it to open an addiction treatment center during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Dave Ray: Addiction is a disease that doesn't discriminate, and it certainly doesn't stop for things like pandemics. We knew that we had to act quickly to help those in our community who were struggling. Although addiction affects millions of Americans, those who suffer often do so alone. The isolation and mental health challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic have only compounded this problem.

Many treatment centers were forced to close their doors during the pandemic, creating an even bigger challenge for those who need treatment. People were desperate for us to open, and we'd get calls every day from people who were in really rough shape.

Despite all the challenges posed by COVID-19, our dedicated team worked tirelessly with the town of Wilmington and state and federal regulatory authorities to help make sure that we were able to open our doors as soon as we could.

Since opening in December 2021, the center has helped hundreds of people begin their journey to recovery. It's been really gratifying to see the difference we're making in people's lives.

Patch: What's one piece of advice or encouragement you would give anyone who is dealing with substance abuse and addiction — either in their own life or in the life of a loved one?

Dave Ray: Addiction is a very difficult disease, but it's one that can be overcome with proper treatment and support.

To put it in the most simple terms — If you are struggling with addiction, there is always hope.
