UPDATED: Search For Bank Robbery Suspect Prompted Shelter-in-Place Order For Schools

Authorities are searching for an armed robbery suspect after Winchester Savings Bank, 188 Medford St., Arlington, was robbed just after 1 Friday afternoon.

A partially masked man came into the bank, brandished a handgun, and demanded cash. He fled on foot with an unknown amount of money and was spotted in a dense residential neighborhood, removing his mask and a dark-colored sweatshirt, according to a police statement.

Cruisers, police dogs and helicopters from various police agencies headed into town to join in the search.

The suspect — described as 5-feet, 11-inches tall, medium build, wearing black pants, dark gray t-shirt, and carrying black sweatshirt — was last seen in area of Medford Street and Mystic Valley Pkwy on foot.

School officials issued a shelter-in-place out of precaution at St Agnes, Arlington Catholic High School, Bishop and Thompson Schools in town, according to authorities. The shelter-in-place was lifted just before 3 p.m. Friday.
