Bogus MBTA Passes-Ringleader Caught

Trio of crooks plead guilty to defrauding MBTA.

According to the Boston Herald, the ringleader of a trio of crooks who pleaded guilty Thursday to defrauding the MBTA used his company’s equipment to print more than 20,000 bogus passes in what is being called “the biggest fare evasions scheme in MBTA history,” prosecutors said.

Andres Townes, 28, worked for Cubic, a company that prints monthly MBTA passes used by millions of commuters who pay hundreds of dollars a piece to ride the rails, according to Attorney General Martha Coakley’s office. She said Townes manipulated the machine to produce passes that looked real, but were not on file with the MBTA, then with accomplices sold the passes using the website Craigslist.
