Barnstable Bridge Dedicated To First Responders
Barnstable's Route 149 overpass spanning Route 6 is now "First Responders Appreciation Overpass."

BARNSTABLE, MA — A Barnstable bridge on Tuesday was dedicated to first responders on National Peace Officers Memorial Day. The Route 149 bridge spanning Route 6 was named “First Responders Appreciation Overpass" during an afternoon ceremony attended by state and local officials. Peace Officers Memorial Day was created by Congress in 1961 to honor fallen law enforcement officers.
Tuesday's ceremony comes amid a somber time on Cape Cod. Last month, Yarmouth police Officer Sean Gannon was shot and killed in Barnstable searching for a career criminal.
"Each and every day these officers and firefighters and dispatchers and paramedics and everybody else sacrifice to come into work everyday," Barnstable Deputy police Chief Matthew Sonnabend said during the ceremony.
