Cape Cod Man Vandalizes Cemetery, Crashes In Getaway: Cops

Cape Cod police said Michael Grady, of Sandwich, knocked over tombstones at Bayview Cemetery then tried to flee on a bicycle.

SANDWICH, MA — A Cape Cod man was arrested Tuesday after police said he vandalized a cemetery then tried to flee the scene on a bicycle. The getaway was short-lived — he crashed and officers took him into custody, police said. Michael Grady, 56, of Sandwich, was charged with property destruction and disorderly conduct.

Sandwich police said Tuesday at about 2:25 p.m., a witness called police and said Grady was riding his bicycle and appeared drunk as he knocked over tombstones.

"Police encountered Grady on Grove Street as he was riding his bicycle away from the scene," Grady said in a statement. "Grady refused to stop and continued riding onto Main Street. Grady was taken into custody on Main Street after falling off his bicycle."
